So you may be wondering how the writers strike is going to affect you. As if life couldn't get bad enough with that Cavemen show taking up valuable prime time, we could start to see some of our favorite plots go down the tubes or take long breaks. I mean Heroes takes like a half a year hiatus as it is, what am I supposed to do with my spare time, actually read Marx?! I think not.
I have hope that the strike won't last too long, especially not with Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the picket lines. Who could say no to Elaine?....other than the soup Nazi, that is. It's been said that her show, The New Adventures of Old Christine, which has been taken on for a full 22-episode order, has broken the so-called "Seinfeld curse" that has had the cast only getting air time in syndication. The poor woman finally weasels her way back onto the small screen and now you're threatening to make her a has been again?! That shit ain't right, Writers Guild of America.
Just as things are looking rough for television actors and viewers alike, reality TV stars are putting down their mics at pathetically attended college appearances nationwide in hopes that their undeserved 15 minutes of fame might be extended to a full half hour.
According to MSNBC television editor Andy Dehnart, reality TV is waiting in the wings, like vultures, to provide filler in the meantime.
Good news for reality fans, though I doubt this will affect my faves, namely The Hills or The Real Housewives of Orange County, but maybe some of you snobs out there will give these masterpieces a shot. I mean, sure, they lack substance...and yeah, these people don't deserve to have such amazing lives when some of us are about to graduate from college $50,000 in debt (pauses to cry), but you know what? At the end of the day, who wants to analyze politically responsible messages in carefully scripted television drama when you've got a girl fight breaking out on a TV show about a bisexual ho-bag looking for love in a pool of seriously tapped 20 somethings? Sometimes bitchy confessionals is exactly what you need.
What a lot of people don't realize is that there is a good deal of scripting involved in reality TV too. This is a pretty interesting article about what writing goes into reality television.
And before you bitch, I know I still have like 5 shows to catch you guys up on, but I'm technically at work right now so it'll have to wait. Sorry!! :)
